Ingredients

Cooked steak - You can use any cut of beef that you would like that. You can use shaved beef as well.

Yellow onion - Red onion or a sweet white onion works, too.

Green pepper - Green bell peppers add a nice color to the casserole and a great crunch.

Olive oil - Helps to coat the pan so that the casserole doesn't stick.

Salt - Salt enhances the natural flavors of the casserole.

Black pepper - Pepper also gives flavor without being too potent or spicy.

Cream cheese - Adds a creamy texture to the casserole and the rest of the ingredients.

Mayonnaise - Helps to give flavor and texture.

Garlic powder - Garlic powder gives a mild garlicky flavor.

Onion powder - Since this has cooked onions as well you only need a bit more onion powder.

Cheddar cheese - To add to the top of the dish. Other types of cheese can be used.

Variations

Use ground turkey - If you want to change the simple ingredients, you could always make this easy dinner using ground turkey. It'll be less fat content but still have that same awesome flavor.

Use a different cheese - I'm all about using cheddar cheese, but you could use provolone slices, too. Most Philly cheesesteak sandwiches use slices of provolone cheese as the melty cheese of choice, so this would be a great pairing with the beef mixture. As long as the cheese melts it will work.

Change up the juicy steak - You can use ribeye steak, sirloin steak, flank steak, or even just shaved steak as great options. All of the flavors work great to give you that authentic Philly cheesesteak flavor.

Seasoning - Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the filling or mix in some jalapenos for a bit of heat.

Sauce - For a saucier casserole mix some beef broth into the filling.

Common Questions

What side dish works well with this low-carb dinner?

This cheesesteak dish pairs really well with lots of different options. A small salad is great, and even a side of steamed veggies would be nice.

What is the best way to store leftovers of this low-carb Philly cheesesteak casserole?

Having leftovers from this keto casserole recipe is the best! That means that you get to eat the good stuff again another time. Just let the recipe cool to room temperature, and then store any leftovers in an airtight container.

To reheat this keto-friendly Philly cheesesteak casserole, you can simply warm it back up in the oven or put it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. As long as you heat it all the way through, it should be good to serve and eat.

Do I need to cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil?

You don't have to. If you're worried that the top of the casserole is starting to get really browned or too dark for your liking, you can add aluminum foil to slow down that process.

Take a peek at the casserole about halfway through the cooking process to make sure that it doesn't look like it's browning too quickly. You can always pivot and add the foil if needed.
