Tips For Making Cutout Sugar Cookies

  • While making rolled sugar cookies may seem a little intimidating, I promise that it’s not!
  • The key is to chill your dough completely before rolling it out.
  • Then, make sure you flour your surface AND rolling pin before trying to roll the dough.
  • Flip and roll. Flip and roll. Continue to do this while getting the dough to about 1/4″ all the way around. Easy, right?! It is!
  • Next, you’ll be ready to cut out the shapes. Use your favorite cookie cutter and go to town.
  • Remember to not crowd the dough on the cookie sheet.
  • Make sure to leave a good 2 inches or so in-between the cookies because they will spread out.
  • Next, bake for only 6-8 minutes for a chewy cookie. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

Soft Sugar Cookie FAQS

Do you cut sugar cookies before or after baking?

They are so much easier to cut before baking! You can always clean them up a bit after they’re done baking if you’d like but make sure to cut the dough before it’s baked.

Why do my sugar cookies crack on top?

Believe it or not, you may not have added the exact correct amount of flour to the cookies. If there is too little flour, cracks can emerge. If you’re overly worried about the cracks, this is where frosting comes into play!

Should you chill sugar cookie dough?

Yes, you should chill the cookie dough. Chilling the dough is what keeps it together and helps it cut out into the shapes that you’re wanting to make.

Pull off the top sheet of parchment, then slide the sheet of dough onto a baking sheet, then pop it in the freezer. (You can stack as many sheets of dough onto one baking sheet as you'd like.) Sandwich your dough between two sheets of parchment, roll, then freeze; it makes cut-out cookies a breeze!

What is the secret to a perfect cookie? ›

  • Always use butter.
  • Choose the right sugar.
  • Choose the right flour.
  • Check your flour is in date.
  • Choose the right kind of chocolate.
  • Cream the butter and sugar.
  • Beat in the eggs.

Is butter or margarine better for cut-out cookies? ›

But when you're baking, butter triumphs over margarine every time. For cakes, cookies, and pastries, butter (unsalted, that is) provides richer flavor. (It begins as cream, after all, and margarine is made from vegetable oil.) Butter's high fat content is also what gives baked goods their texture.

Why won't my cut-out cookies hold their shape? ›

Too much flour will make your cookies dry and crumbly. Too much sugar and butter can make sugar cookies spread and lose their shape when baked. This one requires a little patience because once you roll out your dough, you are ready to bake. Be patient and bake your cookies when the dough is really cold.

How to keep cut out sugar cookies from spreading? ›

To prevent this make sure the baking sheets are always at least on room temperature. Ideally you want to cut your cookies and then chill them with the baking sheet. that way the tray is still cool when it goes in the oven and the cookies have no time to spread before they are baked through.

What makes cookies chewy and not hard? ›

Cornstarch Is The Secret To Soft And Chewy Cookies.

Do you flatten cookie dough before baking? ›

If the dough is chilled before baking then the cookies will be slightly more rounded, so if you want slightly flatter cookies then bake them as soon as you have mixed up the dough. But we would not recommend flattening the cookies completely as this will affect the texture.

How long to chill cookie dough before baking? ›

If you're short on time, try and squeeze in at least half an hour if you can. 30 minutes will do the trick if you're simply looking to avoid your cookies spreading all over the place. If you have the luxury of chilling the dough overnight to develop flavor, go for it.

How thick should cut out sugar cookies be? ›

On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the sugar cookie dough to ¼-inch thick. Cut out shapes as desired, transfer to prepared baking sheets, and bake cookies until set but still pale, 10 to 12 minutes.

Can I use country crock instead of butter for cookies? ›

Yes! Country Crock® is great for cooking and baking. Certain Country Crock® products can be swapped 1:1 for butter in cooking and baking recipes: Country Crock® Baking Sticks and Country Crock® Plant Butter sticks and tubs.

Does too much butter ruin cookies? ›

Butter is an emulsifier and it makes cookies tender. It also adds in the crispy-around-the-edges element. Adding too much butter can cause the cookies to be flat and greasy. Adding too little butter can cause the cookies to be tough and crumbly.

Why are my cut out sugar cookies hard? ›

Once the edges develop a golden hue, you've gone too far. While overcooked sugar cookies are certainly still palatable, they'll be hard and crunchy, instead of soft and chewy. → Follow this tip: Pull the cookie sheet from the oven as soon as they've set and gained some color, but not too much.

What is the trick for cookie cutters? ›

Dip your cookie cutters in flour with each cut. Work from the center of the rolled-out dough to the edges, cutting shapes close to one another to prevent extra scraps and extra rerolling. If the cookie cutters get really sticky, wipe them off with a damp paper towel.
