Sugar Free Cinnamon Apple Crumble - Neils Healthy Meals (1)

This healthy apple crumble recipe isn't made with any added sugar but you'll never know the difference!

The only sugar that's in this recipe is natural and comes from the apple itself.

That makes this a super low fat apple crumble for those of us watching our waistlines.

Bursting with fruit and made with only 5 ingredients; it’s perfect for dinner parties, so you can let the conversation flow instead of being stuck in the kitchen!

I’m really lucky as this recipe wasn’t planned at all. No, in fact it came about as I was presented with a huge bag of free apples from Liam, on the weekend of the Great Scottish Run.

In fact if you follow me on Facebookyou’ll have had a sneak peek at this recipe already. 🙂

I’m not one to turn down free food (would you?) especially when its fresh fruit of a quality like these apples were.

Nor am I going to ask where it came from, ha ha, though I do believe it was a legitimate source!

I’ll say no more, other than it gave me the inspiration for this simple recipe.

You’ve just got to love the humble apple though. Haven’t you? What’s that saying again?

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”

It’s possibly quite right too. Apples are simply crammed full of fibre.

The soluble fibre found in apples (pectin), binds with fats in our intestines which can help to lower our cholesterol levels, leading to a healthier heart overall. 🙂

I’ve got great memories of apple crumble being a “family staple” cooked by my gran in Dundee, and then by my mum.

In fact, it’s pretty apt that I’m publishing this recipe today.

I’ve just returned from a weekend up in Dundee seeing my parents where my mum made a fantastic bramble and apple crumble for pudding. So you see it’s a family tradition!

Why Sugar Free Cinnamon Apple Crumble?

So what’s this all about then with this sugar free cinnamon apple crumble?

Well folks, firstly I’m not going to stop using sugar altogether in my pudding and baking recipes

Nor am I going to deny that I don’t enjoy that sugary sweet taste every now and then, when I do use sugar. So don’t think Neil’s off on some kind of mission!

But that’s the thing isn’t it?

It is just EVERY NOW AND THEN that I use sugar, and when I do, it’s only the very minimal required amount.

As with everything following the80/20 rule, it’s all about moderation.

It’s worth reminding ourselves here why sugar isn’t good for you.

Of course you could go that whole step and aim to completely remove sugar from your diet and if that is your mission or goal, then so be it!

But, as I state in my about page, I’m not here to tell you what to do. I’m merely here to promote and talk about a lifestyle, devoid of constant dieting, that I believe is the right lifestyle and works!

Why Sugar Isn’t Good For You

Sugar is nothing but empty calories. It doesn’t fill you up, it gives you a “rush” as your insulin levels spike and then drop often leaving you feeling tired and depressed.

Sugar is addictive and one of the biggest causes of obesity.

In particular it’s associated with the rise of childhood obesity, particularly linked to a high consumption of sugary fizzy drinks.

Not just that it’s said to decrease a child’s IQ level as the lack of a healthy diet denies young vulnerable children nutrient rich foods to aid their growth.

Sugar gives you tooth decay. That’s probably the least of your concerns though when you consider it’s more of a concern when it’s linked to type 2 diabetes, cancer, liver disease and heart disease.

Folks, the list is pretty endless and I don’t want to go on about it. You get the gist right?

So next time you’re needlessly adding huge quantities of sugar to a recipe or about to cram a sugary treat into your mouth, just have a thought to the consequences of having too much.

And maybe make a healthier sugar free recipe like this delicious cinnamon apple crumble. 😀

So let’s get right stuck into this amazing healthy apple crumble recipe without further ado!

In order to make this recipe sugar free and a diabetic apple crumble I substituted sugar with Stevia instead.

Stevia is an herb, originally from South America, though it now grows throughout the world.

The Benefits Of Using Stevia In This Apple Crumble Recipe

  • Stevia is naturally very sweet and considered 100 to 200 times sweeter than sugar so you don't need to use as much as sugar.
  • It doesn’t raise blood sugar levels like sugar and other artificial sweeteners do and is therefore suitable for diabetics.
  • As a sweetener and medicinal herb, Stevia has been used in various cultures around the world for centuries but only gained modern popularity in recent years.
  • Consuming stevia as an alternative and avoiding sugar can have health benefits of its own.
  • Approved as a sweetener (EU in 2010), Stevia is found as a sugar free alternative in many products such as fizzy drinks, cakes and desserts.
