Sending a Mail

You are free to send mail to inmates in Marion County Jail All mail except legal mail (such as a letter from an attorney or the courts) is inspected for prohibited materials and content before it is delivered to the inmate.

Deliveries are made Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Legal mail is opened in the presence of the person who received it.

If you write a letter to in an inmate, you need to include the person’s name and gallery number on each page of the letter. One page of the letter must have your mailing address. The letter must be written on white paper or white construction paper with blue or black ink or a No. 2 pencil.

If you want to send a photo to an inmate, you must use a third-party vendor, such as Walgreens Photo Center, CVS Photo Center, Snapfish, Walmart, Costco/Sam’s Club, Shutterfly, and Kodak.

The following items are prohibited and will not be delivered to the inmate:

• Letters using colored markers, colored pencil, or crayon

• Electronic devices
• Oversized greeting cards
• Plastic cards
• Carbon paper
• Metal objects

Returned Mail

Mail that contains prohibited or fails to include the person in jail’s name, gallery, and housing unit will be returned to the sender. It typically takes several weeks for mail to be returned.

Commissary account

In person at kiosk: Deposit money in person 24 hours a day, seven days a week using on-site kiosks at both Marion County Jail I, 40 South Alabama Street. You must have a valid driver’s license or state ID.

By telephone: To deposit money for a person in Marion County Jail I, call 888.988.4768 and use site ID 82.

By US mail: You can deposit money by mailing a prepaid money order, other accredited prepaid money order, or US government check to the jail where the individual is housed.

Make money orders payable to Marion County Jail Commissary. The inmate’s name (the same one used when processed into jail), cell housing number, date of birth, and gallery number must appear on the money order. Money orders without the necessary information will be returned. Do not send cash, personal and payroll checks, or credit card numbers by mail.

Visiting Rules

If you want to visit an inmate, you must schedule the visit one day before the desired visit day. You can schedule both individual and family visits.

The appointment scheduling line is open from 10:30 AM, seven days a week, until all available appointments are booked or 3:30 PM, whichever comes first. The appointment scheduling line phone number is 317-639-9300. To cancel an appointment, call 317.327.1553 or 317.327.1554 at least two hours before the scheduled time.

In general, visitation times at Marion County Jail I are 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m., seven days a week. The day you can visit an inmate depends on what visiting group the inmate is in. You can determine what visiting group an inmate is in by using this form.

This is the group visiting schedule:

• Monday: Youthful offenders (3 p.m.), 2-East, receiving, and females
• Tuesday: Youthful offenders (4 p.m.), 4-East, and SCU
• Wednesday: Females, receiving, and Westside males
• Thursday: 4-East
• Friday: 2-East, Westside males, and SCU
• Saturday: Juvenile overflow (10 a.m.), out-of-state visitors (3 p.m.), and general population overflow (3 p.m. and 4 p.m.)
• Sunday: Overflow (10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m.)

What to expect

When you visit a person in jail, you must follow the guidelines of the facility. These procedures keep you, the staff, and the inmates safe. Here are the rules at Marion County Jail:

• Your name must be on the person’s visitation list. You cannot visit if a no-contact or restraining order exists between you and the person, or if you had been incarcerated less than six months ago.
• Dress in clothing that is not provocative, revealing, low-cut, or tight-fitting. You may not wear short shorts or miniskirts. Hemlines must not be shorter than 4 inches above the top of your knee.
• All visitors—including children—are subject to a pat-down search before entering the visiting area. Officers search for contraband and weapons.
• Store your personal property in the lockers located outside the visitation office.
• Check in with the visitation office 45 minutes prior to your appointment time.
• Present a valid state ID or driver’s license when you check in.
• Once you have checked in and been shown to a room, you must stay there until the visit is over.
• A police dog will inspect you and your property. If it detects contraband, an officer will give you a thorough outside body search and cancel your visit. If you leave during a K-9 search, you lose future visitation privileges.
• While in the visitation office and rooms, smoking, eating, drinking, and having anything in your mouth is not permitted.
• You can visit twice in one week if you are the only person on the inmate’s visitation list.
