The Cliffs of Moher are located in County Clare along the Wild Atlantic Way on the West Coast of Ireland.

Fly directly to Shannon Airport from Stansted, Heathrow or Gatwick. Visit Shannon Airportfor all flight information.

Travelling by car:

  • Ennis to the Cliffs of Moher (40 minutes)
  • Limerick to Cliffs of Moher (50 minutes)
  • Shannon to the Cliffs of Moher (60 minutes)
  • Galway to the Cliffs of Moher (90 minutes)
  • Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher (180 minutes)

By boat: Get the ferry from which sails from Tarbert in Kerry to Killimer in Clare (45 minutes).

Out-of-this-world scenery

The Cliffs of Moher are entirely vertical and the cliff edge is abrupt. On a clear day, the views are tremendous, with the Aran Islands etched on the waters of Galway Bay.
From the cliff edge, you can just hear the booming far below as the waves crash and gnaw at the soft shale and sandstone.

With a due-west exposure, sunset is the best time to visit.

Did you know that the Cliffs of Moher have appeared in Harry Potter and several other well-known films?

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you might recognise the large cave visible from the central viewing platform. It was featured in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince when Harry and Dumbledore ventured into the cave from sea in search of ‘Horcruxes’. Interestingly, the scene was the only part of the movie not filmed in the UK, adding an extra touch of intrigue to the Cliffs of Moher.

We have been visited by John Charlton OBE DL former English footballer and manager. John Charlton was part of the England national team that won the 1966 World Cup and managed the Republic of Ireland national team from 1986 to 1996 achieving two World Cup and one European Championship appearances.

We have also been visited by Ronald Edward Harris, or “Chopper” former English footballer who played for Chelsea in the 1960s and 1970s. Harris captained Chelsea to FA Cup and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup success, and made a club record 795 appearances

Did you know the Cliffs of Moher have long been admired for their scenic beauty, but few know much about the man who first promoted tourism to this inspiring place?

Cornelius O’Brien, a benevolent local landlord and parliamentarian in London, was the first to formally recognise the cliffs as a tourist destination. The tower was built on the cliffs as an observation tower for the English tourists who frequented the cliffs at the time. It is said to have initially served as a teahouse or folly another version tells of Cornelius building the tower in order to impress women he was courting! Whatever the truth – from this vantage point on a clear day you can see the Aran Islands and the Twelve Bens of Connemara across Galway Bay.
